Elections and referendums in Europe

Welcome to CIVICACTIVE's Elections and referendums in Europe.

This website is part of the dissemination strategy of the CIVICACTIVE project. It provides an on-line database of aggregated election statistics from European Parliament elections; national parliamentary and presidential elections as well as EU related referendums held in EU member countries during the period 1990-2007.

Opportunities
The primary goal of this website is to facilitate comparative research on elections in Europe. The on-line database gives students and researchers alike better possibilities to:

  • carry out comparative regional and country studies: Election statistics on sub-national levels facilitate regional comparative election studies within and across country borders.
  • carry out comparative studies of election types: With respect to countries that holds different elections, the data sets available at this website make it possible to compare and contrast participation across different types of elections.
  • conduct comparison over time: Election statistics is published over a 15 year period, thus facilitating (to some extent) time serie studies.
  • combine election data sets with additional statistics: The correspondance between the aggregated election results and the EUs Nomenclatura of Territorial Units of Statistics (NUTS) structure facilitates studies that incorporate additional statistical measures as most countries apply the NUTS statistical regions when gathering annual statistics (demography, labour market etc).

Data sets are available both in tabular format and in a rectangular matrix. Read more about the data here , or go directly to country pages, or election type pages to access data.
